 Course Overview

Students have the option to choose IGCSE Spanish instead of Mandarin. The IGCSE Spanish course is delivered intensively in Key Stage 4, with six hours of instruction per week. This accelerated format allows students with little or no prior experience in Spanish to complete the full IGCSE course within just two years.

The intensive nature of the program ensures rapid progress, sustained motivation, and a swift boost in speaking confidence. As a result, students typically develop strong communicative skills and are well positioned to achieve high grades at IGCSE. They will also be thoroughly prepared to continue with AS and A-Level Spanish in Key Stage 5. We use a combination of Extensive Processing Instruction (EPI) resources alongside more traditional IGCSE textbooks to support effective learning and long-term retention.

Students will learn to process content on the following themes:

Everyday activities;

Personal and social life;

The world around us;

The world of work;

The international world.

How You Will Be Assessed

Students will be examined on the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with each of these accounting for 25% of the final grade.

Listening 50 minutes (25%)

Speaking 10 minutes (25%)

Reading 60 minutes (25%)

Writing 60 minutes (25%)

Why Choose Spanish?

Spanish is spoken as a first language by almost 500 million people world-wide which means that its acquisition can open-up an extensive range of social, professional and educational possibilities, not to mention the many cognitive advantages - studies have shown that learning a new language can activate dormant brain networks, improving neuroplasticity and enhancing brain function, creativity, and critical thinking. Spanish is one of the more accessible language for native English speakers and as such, enables quick progress, representing an excellent introduction to the wonderful world of language acquisition, as well opening up countless professional and personal opportunities for an internationally minded young person.
