All pupils follow a rich programme of activities that are centred around our exceptional location and wide variety of specialist facilities. We believe that the parallel curriculum of societies, clubs and activities plays an important role in the development of character attributes, physical literacy and the soft skills which are so important for future employability. Physical activity is central to the development of resilience and all round emotional health.
A significant proportion of the curriculum is dedicated to activities and all pupils are expected to participate in a core curriculum of sports, outdoor pursuits and elective activities.
Their choices and workload are closely monitored by their personal tutor to ensure that they make wise choices and develop a wide variety of interests. In the early years, it is essential for long term development for pupils to maintain a wide range of interests and to resist the temptation to specialise too soon.
The programme makes full use of the excellent facilities. On our site alone we are able to offer a rich programme of traditional sports including: rugby, football, netball, tennis, cricket and athletics. We also have the facilities to encourage pupils to learn how to play squash, badminton, table tennis and basketball. As we have a superb 9-hole golf course, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils develop a basic understanding of the game and to make provision for pupils who show an aptitude to have specialised coaching and match opportunities.
Children gain much from outdoor learning opportunities and unlike many schools, outdoor activities like walking, kayaking, bouldering, climbing, fell running and camping are something we do regularly and not just once a year. We offer the Duke of Edinburgh award and, because of the immense benefits, it is our expectation that all pupils will follow the Bronze Award programme with the hope that they will be inspired to follow through to achieve the Silver and prestigious Gold Awards.
Pupils with an interest in business are encouraged to engage in Enterprise Activities to learn about the challenges and rewards of business life.
The final composition of the activities programme will be shaped by the skills, qualifications and competencies of the teaching and support staff. We are sure to attract strong interest from teachers with a passion for sport and the outdoors.
We hope that all pupils develop a lifelong passion for sport and the outdoors with an understanding of the long term benefits of remaining physically fit and active throughout their working life.
